ADT Security: An Important Part of Your Fire Escape Plan

Our ADT Security system monitors our house and helps us stay safe in many dangerous situations. ADT puts the security in home security, you might say.

One great example of this is fire emergencies. My family has recently been reviewing and rehearsing our “Fire Plan”. So, I thought I’d share some tips to help you create a plan for your family as well.

• Install and maintain smoke alarms in every room of your home. This is job #1.


• Create and practice a fire escape plan with your family. Let your kids hear the sound of the smoke alarm systems, so they know what to listen for, and they aren’t scared when they go off. If your home alarm system goes off, make sure your family knows all the possible exit routes to get outside of the house, such as through a walk-out basement, any viable window, or a front or back door. And, designate a location outside, away from your house, for your family to meet again.


• Teach your family the safety techniques they can use should a fire occur: wrap themselves in wet towels, crawl to avoid smoke, test doorknobs for heat before opening doors, etc.


• Keep items that are potential fire hazards well maintained, such as your oven, washer and dryer, water heater, and so forth. Keep these items clean and free from any dirt, grime, or lint that can ignite and cause fires.


• Have your home inspected regularly to make sure that your wiring is in good condition and doesn’t need repairs.


• Keep tree limbs trimmed back away from your house. If a lightning strike hits a nearby tree, a limb (if not the whole tree) could fall directly on your house. Obviously, a burning tree limb falling on your house poses a significant danger.


• Turn off or unplug unused appliances. It reduces the risk for electrical fires (and saves money on the electric bill, too).


• Don't leave candles burning overnight or in rooms where you're not spending time. Never leave home while candles are still burning

These are just a few of the fire safety tips that are most important to our family.
