Police in Valdosta, Georgia have arrested a homeless man in connection with a July 2013 home invasion. The homeowner was inside the home when she heard a loud noise, then witnessed a man removing the screen from her bedroom window. The homeowner was able to quickly move to another part of the home, where she called police for help. When they arrived, the suspect was inside the home rummaging through her purse and jewelry. The Valdosta crime suspect was found with both cocaine and a crack pipe on his person at the time of his arrest. Police also learned quickly that the suspect, who was immediately transported to the Lowndes County jail, was homeless. As disturbing as this home invasion incident is, Georgia crime experts hope that despite the recent spike in unemployment numbers (up an entire percentage point for the month of June 2013), that crime numbers will remain minimal as the area recovers economically. Their best advice for homeowners is to secure their valuables, create a neighborhood watch program (either formally or informally) and to consider installing a home security system, which works around the clock and provides a rapid alert to both the homeowner and first responders in the event of a break-in.
