Annual Crime Rates in
Salisbury, Maryland

On June 21, 2013, two men were arrested for stealing a large amount of antiques and collectibles. The men then sold the items, valued at over $5,000, for scrap metal, according to police. The arrests were the result of an investigation, which began June 12, when approximately 600 pounds of antiques made of brass, silver and pewter, were reported missing from a home on North Division Street in Salisbury. It is believed that this recent crime in Salisbury was conducted over a two-week period. The two men, who were both charged with first-degree burglary, theft and malicious destruction of property, were ordered held on bonds between $25,000 and $40,000. Police say that the men sold the antiques to a local scrap metal dealer not long after the items were stolen, which aided in their arrest. Police say that metal thefts continue to rise as there is little regulation of the metal resale market. Scrap dealers are making an effort to document those that attempt to sell copper tubing and other metals by requiring identification from the seller, as well as using video surveillance technology that police can use to identify those who sell stolen metals. It is not clear if any of this new technology was used to apprehend the suspects in Salisbury. (Source: WBOC. 21 June 2013.)
