How to Make Your Car Less Attractive to Thieves

blog-default It's no secret that cars are a big investment, and many people put a lot of time and effort into maintaining their vehicles to run efficiently, look good and get them from point A to point B. But no matter how much time you put into your car, all of your efforts could be for naught if a car thief manages to break into your vehicle. Here are a few ways to make your car less attractive to thieves.

Keep it locked and shut It may sound like common sense, but a lot of people fail to close windows, doors and sunroofs and lock their cars before leaving them. Even if you're just going into the store for a quick errand, close the windows and lock your vehicle while you're inside. An open vehicle is an invitation to thieves, and they're less likely to go through the hassle of breaking into a locked car.

Hide your valuables Whether it's your mp3 player, your purse, your GPS or your shopping bags from a recent mall trip, these items should be stowed away where they're not visible to people who may look in through your car's windows. If a thief sees something in your car that he or she wants, it only takes a few seconds to break a window and reach in to grab in. Keep everything stored safely in your trunk or remove them from your car.

Get a car alarm - or make it look like you have one Whether you invest in a car alarm or just buy a blinking light at an automotive store that can be fixed to your dashboard, a thief won't be keen on messing with your vehicle if he or she thinks that it has an alarm that could go off at the first sign of tampering.

Park in well-lit areas If you're parking on the street or in a parking lot at night, try to park your vehicle in a well-lit area. Thieves are more likely to target vehicles that are in the shadows because they're less likely to be seen breaking into them. Even in your driveway, a motion sensor light should be installed that will turn on if someone moves in the area.

Don't make it look unused Whether your car is covered in fallen leaves or snow, it's a good idea to brush it off as soon as possible. Otherwise, thieves may think that no one has been around using the vehicle in a while, which gives them time to break in.
