Do I Need a Pro? How to Know if DIY is Right for You

contractor-300x224 Over the last few years, home security and automation technology has become much easier to self-install through DIY. Some systems and devices, however, aren’t the easiest to install and actually require professional installation. Still, it’s very common for folks to be a little unsure of whether or not they should do their own installations. Here are some instances when you should hire a pro and when you really don’t need to:

When You Probably Don’t Need a Pro

There are plenty of situations where you don’t need to hire a professional. Here are a few:
  • When You Know What You’re Doing
One of the main reasons people feel like they need to hire a pro they’re insecure about their installation abilities. This is a completely understandable sentiment, and if you feel this way, hire someone who knows what they’re doing. However, if you feel like you’re up to the challenge, or know exactly what to do, then there’s no need to hire someone. Save some money and do it yourself.
  • When the System or Product is Wireless
Wireless systems are usually very easy to set up because they’re items that don’t require any hardwiring and they can be bought right off the shelf. Even if you don’t feel like the most tech-savvy individual, these systems almost always come with manuals. If you’re still having difficulty, you can always call customer service and have them walk you through the installation and setup processes. Often times, you can find the customer service number on the front or back of a product instruction manual.

When You Should Hire a Pro

As mentioned, there are some things that can be installed on their own; and some things you simply shouldn’t install yourself. Here are a few installations that should definitely be left up to a professional:
  • When There’s A Lot of Wiring to Do
Unless you’re an electrician, your best bet is to call a professional to install any home automation or security system with a ton of wiring work. No matter how many how-to videos you’ve watched on YouTube, doing your own wiring is not the best idea as you run the risk of damaging your home. Or worse, you risk injuring yourself!
  • When a Professional Is Recommended
If a home security company is recommending professional installation, it’s probably for good reason. Some system installations are so complicated that they require their installers to go through rigorous training. Even if you feel like you’re capable of installing the system yourself, let the professionals do their work. You don’t want to risk damaging your property. When it comes to home security installations, do what’s recommended or required and only what you feel like you can handle. Trust your instincts, read the instructions, and you should be fine. If you run into trouble at any stage, don’t hesitate to reach out to customer service for assistance.
